William A. Little Society
Formed in 1978, and named after longtime Department Chair Dr. William A. Little, the group is a resident/alumni/past faculty association. Every resident or fellow that graduates and every faculty member from our OBGYN Department is eligible for membership of the Society.
The Society holds regular board meetings and hosts a yearly weekend conference annually which gives alumni a chance to interact with each other and current Department residents. This conference also showcases the latest research conducted by our residents and fellows, as one day of the conference is solely dedicated to resident and fellow research presentations. The other days are dedicated to papers from members and guest speakers.
Awards for the scientific presentations are given by the Society to the best paper by residents and fellows. “The Best Resident of the Year Award” is also presented annually by the Society and has been sponsored by Ortho-McNeil Pharmaceutical since 1982.

About William A. Little
Dr. William A. Little was the longest serving OB/GYN Chair at any academic medical center nationwide and the longest serving Jackson Chief of Service; he served for 30 years until his death in 1996. Those who knew him recall his compassion for making quality care available to all people, regardless of their economic status, and his dedication to the field of gynecology.
His major contributions to the Department were establishing:
- The four subspecialties with accompanying fellowships: Maternal Fetal Medicine, Gynecologic Oncology, Reproductive Endocrinology, and Gynecology.
- Financial stability that allowed expansion of full-time faculty.
- Outreach private services which proved successful even when the Dean saw it as experimental.
