Community Outreach
The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology is committed to being an active member of the community. Below are some of our efforts to serve the underprivileged.
Project Prevent
Project Prevent, an initiative led by the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology in partnership with DOCS, provides free cervical cancer screening to women ages 19 to 49 and free HPV (human papillomavirus) vaccination to women ages 19 to 26 at designated DOCS annual health fairs and weekly clinics. For complete details on Project Prevent, click here.
Violence Against Women and Children
The department has entered into an alliance with Kristi House (a non-profit organization aiding children who are victims of abuse and their families) in an interdepartmental program with the Department of Pediatrics.
Health Rights
Dr. Jonell Potter developed a program at the UM Law School to provide mentorship for young lawyers who want to assist patients with their immigration status and other legal issues as they access medical care in our system. The UM School of Law Center for Ethics and Public Service is an interdisciplinary project devoted to the values of ethical judgment, professional responsibility and public service in law and society. Law students attend the OB/GYN HIV clinics and provide services to patients and their families.
Training for Rapid HIV Testing
The Department of OB/GYN has instituted a Florida-wide program in which nurse practitioners train obstetric units throughout the state in Rapid HIV testing called MIRIAD (Mother-Infant Rapid Intervention At Delivery).
HIV Testing
The Department of OB/GYN, Division of Research and Special Projects, offers free HIV testing on Mondays and Tuesdays. Those interested can call 305-243-4002 or 305-243-2169.
